Visit the Agafay Desert

Morocco is famous for its infinite Saharan dunes around Merzouga or Erg Chegaga. Let me tell you right away: the Agafay Desert is entirely different.

Right on the doorstep of Marrakech, the Agafay Desert is what is known as a “reg” – a stone desert. You will see a beautiful succession of arid hills that superimpose wonderfully with the Atlas Mountains and their snow-capped peaks. The combination of desert and mountains makes this a spectacular place. However, don’t expect to roll around in immense sand dunes.

The Agafay Desert is accessible in just 40 minutes from Marrakech. The road connecting the two destinations is excellent. If you come with your rental car, you just need to turn onto the small road on your left before arriving at the town of Agafay. There is a sign indicating “Agafay Desert.”

This is where the exploration begins. We follow the main road, which is paved and does not require a 4×4. It is very easy to drive and stop as you please. We walk on the hills to admire the desert that stretches as far as the eye can see and ends its course in the mountains.

Continuing towards Lalla Takerkoust, the vegetation intensifies as we get closer to the lake. Abundant water is favorable to agriculture. In just a few minutes, the scenery transforms completely.

What activities can you do in the Agafay Desert?

The desert, a place of contemplation, is also a playground for various activities.

Enjoy the Landscapes

It goes without saying that the first thing to do (and it’s free) is to admire the view. If you come with your car, you can easily stop at places you like (as long as you find a safe spot to park without blocking traffic). From there, it’s possible to walk around. The landscape is open, so it’s hard to get lost unless you wander far.

To enjoy the views, there is also the option to relax at one of the many bar-restaurants set up on the hills. These are perfect places to have a drink. They are sometimes attached to accommodations.
For lunch, these establishments generally offer set menus for prices that I found high (between €20 and €30 for standard menus). Clearly, you are paying for the setting and the view. This price can include access to the pool if there is one, so ask before you sit down.

Camel Ride (Dromedary)

When you think of the desert, the silhouette of dromedaries quickly comes to mind. And indeed, you will encounter many of these animals in the Agafay Desert.

Along the road, there are stands where the camels wait to take you on a ride. Don’t hesitate to compare prices from different renters before deciding. Expect to pay about €15 for half an hour. If you go through accommodation, prices can be higher, especially if you are in a luxury establishment.

Organized excursions generally include a camel ride in the program.

Quad Biking

We are not big fans of motor sports, but know that one of the main activities in the Agafay Desert is quad or buggy riding. Almost all excursions include a quad ride.

When it’s not included, it’s very easy to book one on the spot from one of the many renters along the road, at a restaurant, or at your accommodation. Expect to pay between €30 and €50 per person for one hour.

Attend a Dinner Show

The desert takes on a different face at sunset. In the evening, darkness reveals a starry sky. To enjoy this atmosphere, book a dinner show at one of the many establishments in the desert. In a beautiful setting, you will taste local specialties to the sound of traditional music and/or while admiring dances or fire shows.

Some excursions to the Agafay Desert leave in the late afternoon to enjoy the sunset, have dinner, and then return to Marrakech.

Spend a Night in the Desert

To complete the experience, spend the night in the desert in one of the various accommodations. They have flourished in recent years, and you will have the choice between nicely furnished tents, unusual bubble domes, or luxurious resorts.

Accommodations offered in the Agafay Desert are rather high-end. If you come with your vehicle, simply book your night and go there on your own. I have made a selection of addresses in the “Where to sleep in the Agafay Desert?” section.

How to get to the Agafay Desert from Marrakech?

With a rental car
The Agafay Desert is easily accessible. The road between Marrakech and Agafay is very good. In 40 minutes, you arrive at Agafay. To enter the desert, turn off just before the entrance to the village of Agafay. There is a sign indicating “Agafay Desert” that shows the direction. The main desert road can be used by standard vehicles. If you want to take secondary tracks, an SUV or 4×4 will be more suitable.

With an excursion (from Marrakech)
Most visitors to the Agafay Desert opt for a guided day or two-day excursion from Marrakech. If your trip is limited to Marrakech and doesn’t include a road trip, it’s easier to book an excursion rather than renting a car specifically for this visit.

Here are our recommendations for excursions to the Agafay Desert from Marrakech (check for French/English options on platforms like GetYourGuide or Viator):

  • Day trip to the Agafay Desert (with quad, camel ride, and dinner show)
  • Discovery of the Agafay Desert (with camel ride and dinner show)
  • Overnight in the Agafay Desert (with dinner show)

When to visit the Agafay Desert?

The ideal time to discover the Agafay Desert is between October and March. Temperatures are pleasant and there are fewer crowds. In the heart of winter, it is mild, so remember to bring a small sweater or jacket to keep warm.

In spring, between April and June, conditions remain favorable, and you may have the opportunity to see some vegetation in the desert.

I advise against summer when temperatures rise quickly, making activities unpleasant. There is no shade in the desert, so the sun beats down quickly.

Also, be aware that the Agafay Desert is very popular. If you come in high season or during peak periods, your experience may be very different from ours. Many visitors complain about overcrowding and the noise of the many quads circulating in the area.

Visit the Agafay Desert alone or with an excursion from Marrakech?

It all depends on your temperament and the experience you want to have. With your own car, you can take as much time as you want at different spots and choose your activities independently. With an excursion, you get straight to the point with a guide, but you will be in a group.

If you are on a road trip in Morocco and already have a car, it’s relevant to add it as a stop.

Where to stay in the Agafay Desert?

To extend the desert experience, I recommend spending a night there. The Agafay Desert is very popular, so accommodations have flourished in recent years. The cost of a night in the Agafay Desert is quite expensive.

Here are some recommendations (you can adapt these to actual hotels/camps you find):

  • Luxury Option: [Name of a luxury camp] – Offers beautiful tents or domes with stunning views and fine dining.
  • Mid-Range Option: [Name of a mid-range camp] – Friendly staff, comfortable traditional tents, and good local food.
  • Budget/Unique Option: Look near Lalla Takerkoust lake for more affordable guesthouses.

What to pack for the Agafay Desert?

There is a big temperature difference between day and night. You will need:

  • Light clothing for the day (long sleeves to protect from the sun).
  • Cap or hat, sunglasses, scarf (for dust).
  • Closed shoes (because of the stones).
  • Warm clothing for the evening: thick pants, fleece or down jacket, windbreaker, beanie, and gloves.
  • Warm pajamas.
